Library services and long range plans will be the subjects for an upcoming series at the Rock Island Library called "Coffee and Conversation."

Augustana College and the Rock Island Public Library have signed an agreement. The new, reciprocal agreement allows students to borrow from the city library, and opens up the college's Tredway Library to city residents.

The Rock Island Library Foundation will soon start raising money to move the main library to the Tri-City Jewish Center. That follows a “philanthropic feasibility study” showing that this is the best of three options.

The Rock Island Library may be able to keep one of its branches open after all. Monday night, library officials presented an updated budget for next year that includes the 30-31 branch.

The Rock Island Library will offer a way to learn more about your family's history. Tomorrow, it will hold a free genealogy program to show what resources are available and how to use them.

A long-range plan to modernize the Rock Island Library, and keep it within budget, is nearly complete. The first of three meetings will be held Tuesday night to update city residents, and find out what they think.

Library director, Angela Campbell, says the tentative plan now calls for closing the two branches, and adding on to the main library downtown.

Campbell says for a community of this size, the library should cover about 50,000 square feet, but the 1903 building has just 33,000, and neither of the two branches can be expanded.
