Thanksgiving in July

Local food pantries could use extra donations beyond the holiday season. That's why a group of local residents has launched a food drive this week called "Thanksgiving in July." The community-wide event will benefit three pantries in Bettendorf, which spokesman Jeff Herzberg says serve families who need extra help during the summer when school is out.

"The reality is, there are lots of people in our community that have a need for regular nutrition. You know, it's a statistical fact that if people keep a good level of nutrition. They get sick less. As children, they study and learn better. A good foundation of nutrition is important to make sure that we sustain in our community."

Local businesses such as the Isle of Capri Casino and HyVee on Devils Glen Road, along with United Point Health Trinity and Churches United of the Quad Cities will collect non-perishable food this week. Herzberg says there's also a need for donations for babies such as diapers and formula. Thanksgiving in July starts today and ends Saturday with a special drive at the parking lot by Faye's Field.
