A midwest-based grocery chain and maker of electric cars are working together. This week, Hy-Vee and Tesla announced the opening of super-charging stations at three stores, including one in Davenport.

Hy-Vee spokeswoman, Tina Potthoff , says Tesla cars can be charged in 20 to 40 minutes.

"We feel it's a good combination - about the time it takes to charge a Tesla car is about the amount of time it would take to pick up a few things at the grocery store or maybe stop by a Hy-Vee Market Grille. It's a really good collaboration with both us and Tesla."

A Hy-Vee official calls it "a marriage made in heaven."

Potthoff says Hy-Vee is helping Tesla make it possible for drivers of its electric cars to travel along Interstate 80 from Council Bluffs to Chicago - a supercharging station is also open in Peru, Illinois.

"When you look at the usage of a Tesla supercharger station or electric vehicle station we have throughout our eight state region at Hy-Vee stores, we're seeing 350 vehicles charging per month on those Tesla stations which is much more than the plain electric vehicle charging stations."

The new supercharging station for Teslas is located at the Hy-Vee in Davenport, at the corner of East 53rd Street and Utica Ridge Road.

Other stations are located in Coralville and Des Moines, and soon in Lincoln Nebraska. Tesla says there are now 400 of these supercharging stations across the country.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
