Salvation Army Begins Holiday Sign-ups

Signing up for the Salvation Army's Christmas Assistance opened today in the Quad Cities.

Spokeswoman Holly Nomura says applications will be accepted through December 6th at offices in Moline and Davenport. And there are no specific income guidelines.

"We just want people to feel dignity. If they think they need it, we will be happy to help them. We do cross-reference the list with all the other agencies in town, such as Toys for Tots, so that if you have signed up for both programs, you'll only end having one program assist you."

Each year the Salvation Army hands out food baskets for the holidays, and toys for children from infant up through the age of 12.

"We set up a very beautiful toy shop. We've collected toys all year long and the parents can actually walk through, just like they're in a store, and pick out the right toys for their kids."

Nomura says applications will be accepted at the Moline and Davenport offices, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Identification is required for adults and children, including driver's licenses and social security cards, and proof of address such as mail addressed to the home.

Last year, the Salvation Army distributed more than 6,000 toys and gifts, to about 22-hundred children, and handed out nearly 2,000 Christmas food baskets.
