Run With Carl

An annual fundraising run for college scholarships will end this weekend. After 20 years, organizers of the Run With Carl have decided Monday will be the last one.

Spokeswoman Jamie Lange says the race was started by the Schillig family to honor their son Carl, an avid runner, who was killed in a car accident. Since the first race in 1995, up to 14-hundred people have participated each year to raise money for college scholarships for graduates of Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley high schools.

She says the family decided the 20th year would be a good time to end the Run With Carl.
Lange says recently the Carl D. Schillig Memorial Scholarship fund awarded its 29th and 30th scholarships. Each year, 2 students receive 4,000 dollars each.

The 20th Anniversary Run With Carl will be held Monday (9/1), beginning at 7:30 AM at the Life Fitness Center in Bettendorf.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
