Plans for a proposed Walmart store in Rock Island could move forward tonight. The city council will vote on final approval for a contract, selling the Watchtower Plaza site on 11th Street to Walmart.
Last week, Mayor Dennis Pauley announced Walmart has signed the contract, purchasing the 23 acres for 4.5-million-dollars. He says it's taken three years to get to "this stage" of the process.
Pauley says a Black Hawk College building, State Farm Insurance, Hill and Valley, and other businesses have moved to clear the Watchtower Plaza site. And so far, it's cost the city about 15-million-dollars.
Pauley estimates the store will bring in 1.4-million-dollars of sales tax revenue to the city each year, and will add 400 jobs.
And he will announce the next stage of the process if the alderman approve the contract.
