River to River Retro Road Trip

Iowa Route 6 Tourist Assoc.

A leisurely drive in old cars down an old highway. That describes the annual River to River Retro Road Trip that begins Friday in Davenport, and ends Sunday in Council Bluffs.

Dave Darby is executive director of the Iowa division of the Route 6 Tourist Association. And he says the goal of the road trip in classic cars is to draw attention to Route 6, and to support the small towns and small businesses along the way.

He thinks when people drive on the interstate, they don't realize that driving can be fun.
Darby says people are invited to join the group - for a few hours or one day, or for all three days.

It all started several years ago while planning a documentary about Route 6, and they needed some classic cars to make the video more interesting. Darby says it caught on, and the drive became an annual event.
He says Route 6 in actually the longest highway in the US, stretching from Provincetown, Massachusetts all the way to Long Beach, California.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
