Options for Fixing Iowa Roads

WVIK Staff

Governor Terry Branstad thinks he and the Iowa legislature may be able to come up with a way to pay for road, bridge, and other infrastructure projects across the state.

Today during his weekly press conference, held in the Quad Cities, the governor said several options are being considered, not just raising the gas tax.

Branstad was governor in 1988 when the last increase in the state gas tax was approved, thanks to majorities from both parties. He hopes that can happen again this year.

The governor is also hoping the legislature will approve his anti-bullying bill this year. It failed to pass both houses last year, but some changes have been made to win bi-partisan support.

Accompanied by Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, Branstad delivered his condition of the state address to the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce - an annual tradition dating back to his first terms as governor.

After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
