Memorial Day Ceremonies

Three observances of Memorial Day will be held in the Quad Cities on Monday.

At 9 am, the Historic Summit Church in Davenport will hold its 96th annual Memorial Day ceremony. In a tradition that started in 1919, it features the reading of a roll call of veterans from Scott County.

The annual ceremony in the National Cemetery on Arsenal Island begins at 10:45, and this year's speaker will be Major General Kevin O'Connell, commanding general of the Army Sustainment Command.
One change from past years is that only people with wheelchairs will be allowed to park in the cemetery - all others will leave their cars at Memorial Park, and take buses to the ceremony.

The American Legion in Milan will also hold its annual service, beginning at 11 am. First Army chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel Steve Moser will be the guest speaker.
All community residents, veterans, and active military personnel are invited to attend. Following the service, a light lunch will be served in the post meeting hall.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
