Efforts continue to improve the competitiveness of sports teams in the Davenport schools. That was the message Monday night to the board of education after two task force studies in the past three years.
Brad Oates, program director for athletics, physical education, and health, says the studies looked first at why high school and intermediate school teams were not as good others in the conference. Then the coaches, athletic directors, and parents came up with possible solutions.
He says fielding good teams is one way to build pride among students and the community.
One of the task forces' recommendations was to find a strength and conditioning supervisor for each of the three high schools.

And two years later, Oates says we're just beginning to see the results of this recommendation. Other recommendations include improving facilities, changing the academic eligibility rules, and providing some sort of early exposure to sports for students in Davenport's elementary schools.
