It's time to renew concealed carry permits for many gun owners in Iowa. The Iowa Weapons Carry Permit law is five years old now, and that means anyone who received a permit in 2011 will need a new one before the first of the year.
Major Tom Gibbs, chief deputy for the Scott County Sheriff's office, says permit holders should renew or apply for a new one at least a month ahead of time.
A new permit costs $54 while a renewal is $29.
Gibbs says the Scott County Sheriff's office issued more than 4,000 permits in
2011.
Those who apply online will receive notification that their permits are ready for pick up, which should take 5 to 10 minutes. People can also apply at the Scott County Sheriff's office.
To obtain a concealed carry permit in Iowa, counties conduct background checks on applicants. Anyone with a record of felony convictions, substance abuse, and serious mental illness will not receive a permit.
