Homeless residents of the Quad Cities who've died during the past year will be remembered Friday. The Quad Cities Shelter and Transitional Housing Council will hold its annual memorial service and vigil.
Council president, Barry Gallagher, says counts are held twice a year, and they usually show between 550 and 600 people are homeless here.
Each year at the memorial service, the names are read of friends and family members who have at one time or another been homeless, and have died during the past year. There are 20 names this year, plus three people who provided services to the homeless.
Gallagher says the event is held each year on or near the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, to increase awareness of the problem.
The service will be held at 7:30 am Friday in the parking lot of Community Health Care, along River Drive in downtown Davenport. The vigil will last until 11 am.
Donations of hats, gloves, scarves, coats, and blankets will be accepted.
