Grocery Stores Report Data Breach

People who shop at Jewel, Osco, and Save-a-lot should check their credit card statements carefully. Albertsons and Supervalu report shoppers' credit and debit card data may be at risk.

Albertsons operates three Jewel Osco stores in the Quad Cities and one in Clinton.

One of Supervalu's chains is Save-a-Lot, and it operates five Save-a-Lot stores in the Quad Cities, with stores in Monmouth, Galesburg, Dubuque, Clinton, Rock Falls, and Freeport. Other Supervalu grocery store chains also include Cub Foods and Shop-N-Save.

The companies say late last month or early this month, malicious software was installed on networks that process credit or debit payments at some of their stores.

Supervalu says the malware was installed on a network that processes card transactions at several chains, but it believes data was only taken from certain checkout lanes at four Cub Foods stores in Minnesota.

Albertsons says the malware may have captured cardholder names, account numbers, and expiration dates at stores in 21 states. The data breach could affect:

  • Jewel Osco stores in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana
  • Albertsons stores and customers in nine western states
  • Acme Markets stores in four eastern states
  • Shaw's and Star Markets in five eastern states

Albertsons is based in Boise, Idaho and has a total of 1,081 stores.
Minnesota-based Supervalu supplies information technology services for several grocery chains including Jewel-Osco. It also reported a data breach in mid-August, but company officials say the two crimes are separate.
