The long-awaited, and long-dreaded demolition of The Lodge in Bettendorf is underway. On Monday Valley Construction began knocking down the former Jumers Castle Lodge.
The local landmark along I-74 at Spruce Hills Drive opened in 1973, but closed last year after failing to compete with the newer, franchised hotels in the Quad Cities.
Russell Construction bought the 9 acre property last December, and president and ceo, Jim Russell, admits he's sad to see it go. But he calls it some of the best real estate in the Quad Cities.
Many local residents turned out to watch the demolition begin, including Susan Kuehl of Moline, who worked as a server at Jumers 36 years ago. She says it's sort of a like going to a funeral for a good friend.
Russell says demolition should be complete in about 2 months, then he hopes to break ground next year on whatever new use there'll be for the property.
