News headlines for the morning of September 22, 2017

  • Due to high temperatures in the forecast, some schools in Moline will close early today. Schools in the district will send students home at 1 p.m., except for Bicentennial, Hamilton, Roosevelt, John Deere, and Wilson.

  • Unemployment continued to fall in the Quad Cities in August, from 5.3 percent last year to 4.5 percent last month. The Quad Cities added about 400 jobs in August: in construction, professional and business services, and in education and health. The area lost jobs in manufacturing and retail.

  • Local educators and business leaders are worried about the future of training for specialized trades in the Quad Cities. Yesterday, about 20 local stakeholders met with U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos from East Moline during a panel discussion about the future of apprenticeship programs.

  • A report from an Illinois agency says residents who buy insurance on the state's health care exchange could see rate increases for the lowest-priced plans by 2018.
