Some shoppers in Illinois received special parking tickets last weekend. Each year. Secretary of State Jesse White sends out officers during the holidays for a Disability Parking Sting - to make sure disabled parking spaces are used by people with disabilities.
And one of the places they checked was the parking lot at SouthPark in Moline.
Spokesperson Beth Kaufman says the parking sting is conducted each year, and so far, Secretary of State Police have given out 28 tickets.
It's legal to park in a disability space if you have a disability placard and license plate. And the disabled person must be the driver or a passenger.
Kaufman says people who violate these rules make it more difficult for disabled people, especially during the holiday season.
Kaufman says Secretary of State Police have checked more than 2,800 placards so far statewide.
Drivers who receive a ticket have to pay 600 dollars and and their license is suspended for six months. The second time, the fine is 1,000 dollars and a one-year suspension.
