Davenport Nominated for Best Riverfront

One year after winning a national contest, Davenport is in the running again. Last year, USA Today named Modern Woodmen Park the best minor league ballpark in the nation, and now the city has been nominated for Best American Riverfront.

Joe Taylor, president and ceo of the Quad Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau, says USA Today sponsors a contest called "Ten Best" in which readers are asked for nominations, and then given the opportunity to vote.

He thinks the value of the contest is "awareness" - one year later he still hears from people who remember the honor won by Modern Woodmen Park.

One of the other finalists for Best American Riverfront is Dubuque. And Taylor says he and his counterpart in Dubuque have agreed a victory for one will be a victory for both.

Both have many similar attractions, including the Miss. River and Great River Rd.

Other finalists include Cincinnati, Detroit, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Milwaukee.

Taylor hopes local residents will vote as often as possible for Davenport - USA Today allows one vote per person per day through October 20th. Go to 10 Best dot com.

After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
