Davenport Central Ground Breaking

Davenport School District

A more than 100 year old school in the Quad Cities will soon have two state-of-the-art facilities. Today the Davenport School District broke ground for a new swimming pool and auditorium at Central High School.
The current pool was built in 1960, but the auditorium dates back to when the building first opened in 1907.

The fine arts curriculum specialist for the district, Steve Schwaegler, says Central has needed a modern auditorium for a long time.

The new auditorium will also seat 900, compared to 640 seats in the current one.

Central athletic director, Brian Ehlinger, says the new and much larger pool will allow Central to host more teams and larger events.

Will be able to host invitational and state qualifying meets.

The new pool will have 8 lanes, compared to 4 in the current one, and Ehlinger says it's one of the last 4-lane pools still open in Iowa.

The 21 million dollar addition to the high school should be completed in about 2 years.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
