The frigid cold in the Quad Cities is causing Augustana College to reopen its residence halls one day earlier than usual after the school's winter break. Dorms will open Saturday at noon.

Augustana normally opens its residence halls just one day before classes resume, but the freezing rain in Sunday's forecast is compelling college officials to open early. The Gerber Center dining center will also open Saturday.

Augustana's slough walking path will remain closed because of the cold. The path—which connects the upper campus to the lower campus—closed last month for repairs, and was scheduled to reopen next week. That work will now continue until further notice.
