Clinton Campaigns at Labor Day Picnic

WVIK Staff
Clinton stands next to Congresswoman Cheri Bustos and US Senator Dick Durbin.

Speaking to a crowd of 5,000, Hillary Clinton promised to raise up the middle class and make it easier for workers to unionize. The Democratic presidential candidate and former secretary of state spoke today at the 48th annual Rock Island County Democratic Party's Salute to Labor chicken fry, in Hampton, Illinois.

If elected to office, Clinton says she would spend the first day working to "reverse the pressures" on working families and people in unions.
Clinton says the "deck is stacked in favor of the those at the top." And promised to change that by raising the minimum wage and supporting women in the work place.

She says fighting for equal pay isn't just a women's issue.

Clinton says she supports affordable care for children and the elderly, as well as paid sick and family leave. And, she would fight to defend social security against privatization, and defend workers' pensions.

This was Clinton's first appearance at the annual Labor Day event in Hampton. Chairman of the Rock Island County Democratic Party, Doug House, says today's crowd was the biggest in 48 years, bringing in about 2,000 more people than expected.
