Chuck Austin's Wife Wants Husband Remembered As A Volunteer

Chuck Austin
City of Rock Island

The community is remembering a former teacher, alderman and volunteer.

A funeral service for Charles "Chuck" Austin will be held Thursday evening at the Rock Island High School Auditorium. Austin was killed last Friday in an accident while volunteering at the John Deere Classic in Silvis. He was 68.

Austin was a math teacher for 33 years, a John Deere Classic volunteer for 27 years and a Rock Island Alderman from 2004 until this past May.

Austin's wife Ann says her husband loved the Quad Cities.

"I want people to remember him as a volunteer, as someone who thought about others before he thought about himself," Ann Austin says. "But don't get me wrong, he really enjoyed life. He was happy being in the Quad Cities. He embraced the community and loved it. But he was thinking about others before he thought about himself."

Chuck Austin also volunteered to answer phones during WVIK pledge drives.

Tune into All Things Considered Friday to hear memories of Austin's time volunteering for the John Deere Classic.
