Cash for Your Old Appliances

You can now get cash for your old appliances. MidAmerican Energy is offering free pick-ups for old refrigerators, freezers, and window air conditioners, and will pay for each one.

By calling a toll-free number, customers can have a recycling company haul away appliances that are no longer being used and receive a cash rebate. MidAmerican will pay 50 dollars for recycled refrigerators and freezers, and 25 dollars for air conditioners.

MidAmerican spokeswoman, Ruth Comer, says the new recycling program makes sense environmentally and economically.

She says keeping older appliances is harmful to the environment, because they contain chemical refrigerants that can damage the atmosphere, and they take up valuable space in landfills.

To qualify for a rebate, appliances must be in working condition.  To schedule a pick-up, call 800-621-2757.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
