Calling the Gold Coast Home

A historic neighborhood in Davenport will host a home tour this weekend, with a twist. Not only will seven homes in the Gold Coast be open for visitors to walk through, but they're also for sale.

Gold Coast resident Mike Schroeder (schro-der) says one of the best-known properties is "The Overview" on West 6th Street. It's a Georgian Revival-style home, built in 1901.

"Wonderful woodwork and fireplaces, and all sorts of original features have survived in the home. It's got a lot of real significant updates, for example a geo-thermal heating system, tile roof, and maybe the most important feature is the view - it's got a view of the Mississippi and downtown Davenport I think is unparalleled."

The neighborhood is located between 5th and 9th streets in Davenport, and from Ripley to Vine Streets. Schroeder says a variety of people live there, including retirees, young families, and new and long-time residents of the Quad Cities.

"It doesn't hurt to have a little ability with a hammer and a saw, but it's not an absolute necessity. There are homes that are completely restored as well as those that need quite a bit of work."

The tour of homes for sale, "Calling the Gold Coast Home," will be held on Sunday (9/15) from noon until 4 pm. Schroeder moved to the Gold Coast in 1995 and lives in a home built in 1893.
