BHC Raises Tuition

The cost to attend Black Hawk College is going up. The board of trustees has approved a tuition increase of 15 dollars per credit hour, to 135 dollars for in-district students, starting in June.

Chief financial officer, Steve Frommelt, says the college has been able to raise tuition by smaller amounts in the past. But now it has to take into account lower state aid, lower enrollment, and rising costs for employee benefits.

With the increase, the average Black Hawk College student, taking 12 credit hours, will pay an additional 180 dollars per semester.

Currently, the college's tuition rate of 120 dollars is at the median for community colleges in Illinois.
Frommelt says last year, Black Hawk received about 7 million dollars from the state - but there's a lot of uncertainty about state funding this year - how much it will be and when it might be received.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
