Overlooking the Mississippi River in Bettendorf, Michael Young's sculpture is supposed to capture the quiet thrill of an eagle diving toward the water. Today, the city and Quad City Arts dedicated the sculpture, called "Swoop," which will be permanently located at Martha's Point.
Executive Director of Quad City Arts, Carmen Darland, says Bettendorf has rented public sculptures since 2008. "Swoop" was set up at the intersection of Grant and State streets about a year ago.
And now, Alcoa, has helped the city buy the sculpture. Davenport Works Manufacturing Director, Rob Woodall, says the sponsorship "was an obvious fit."
Alcoa contributed 9-thousand-dollars of the 19-thousand-dollar cost.
The Chicago-based artist's aluminum sculpture stands 24-feet-tall, and catches different colors in the sun. And, Young says he made the piece for "this kind of setting."
"Swoop" is the sixth permanent sculpture owned by Bettendorf. Also new this year are two temporary sculptures at the Waterfront Convention Center.
