Altar Crawl in Davenport

Several historic churches in Davenport will be open for tours this weekend when the Hilltop Campus Village sponsors its first "altar crawl."

Marion Meginnis, a member of the organizing committee, says five of the six churches are on the National Register of Historic Places. And their congregations are some of the first that formed in Davenport, even before it officially became a city in 1836.

"They all began down in the little village of Davenport. As people saw a need, they formed congregations, they built churches, and they kind of moved up the hill, building these great churches that you see today."

The current churches were built between 1867 and 1964. The six are: Bethel A.M.E, First Baptist, First Christian, First Presbyterian, Saint John's United Methodist, and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

The altar crawl runs from 1 to 5 pm Sunday - no tickets are required and the tours are free.
