A Taylor Ridge developer is asking the Rock Island City Council to annex and rezone land along Highway 92 near a city golf course. Tonight, aldermen are scheduled to consider the request from Raju Penmatcha who has worked with Rock Island on other projects in the past.

Rock Island County

The Rock Island County board may soon decide what to do with the county nursing home. Last week, board members discussed four options for the Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline, and a vote is possible Tuesday night.

A new park in Davenport will honor Martin Luther King and the importance of black history. This morning, Mayor Bill Gluba and members of the King Task Force announced the park will be located at East 5th Street and Brady. The city owns the property which is currently used as a parking lot.

Burgess Dies in Prison

A man convicted of a notorious child killing in western Illinois has died in prison. The Department of Corrections says 47 year old Ray Burgess died Tuesday at the Stateville Correctional Center.

Despite harsh temperatures, flooding, and fires, 2014 was a good year for Rock Island. That was the message today  from Mayor Dennis Pauley during his annual state of the city address to a joint meeting of Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.  Last year, Rock Island was forced to make unexpected repairs to streets after flooding and extreme cold temperatures. And, a fire in September damaged some downtown buildings. 

Bruce Rauner has been sworn in as Illinois' 42nd governor.

 

 The Republican businessman took the oath of office Monday during an inaugural

ceremony in Springfield. He is the first Republican to lead the state in more

than a decade.

 

 Rauner defeated Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in November with promises to ``shake

up'' state government. He faces an immediate challenge in working with a

Democratic-controlled Legislature to eliminate a multibillion-dollar budget

hole.

Prosecutors in Rock Island County have dismissed charges against a 22 year old Moline man whose murder trial was supposed to begin Tuesday. Yolanduis McDuffie was accused of killing 24 year old Derek Jackson of Rock Island in December of 20-13. 

State's Attorney, John McGehee, says the case against McDuffie was dismissed "without prejudice," which means charges may be re-filed. He says new evidence was revealed before the trial began, leading to the decision.
