A funeral will be held Friday for a long-time member of the faculty at Augustana College. Erwin Weber died this week at the age of 92. He taught german at the college from 1962 to 1988. Retired religion professor Ralph Radloff says they were friends for 40 years, and that Weber had a "distinctive personality."\
"He started his class each year making it certain for students that they would have to work hard. And I think some left him because he frightened them a bit because he sounded like he'd be very demanding. Those who stayed with him really learned to appreciate and love him."
He says Weber had many interests - he played the harmonica and loved classical music, he was a talented painter, was very interested in local history, and co-authored a book about Martin Luther.
Weber was born in Germany and proud of his heritage, but Doctor Radloff also calls him a "a very loyal American."
"He knew that he was fortunate to have grown up here. He had two brothers who died fighting for the Nazis, and he realized he was very fortunate to have been able to come to America when he was a teenager."
Visitation for Weber will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home in Rock Island. A funeral service is set for Friday at 11 am, also at Wheelan-Pressly.
