Thomson Prison Update

February  05, 2013

Now that the Thomson prison has been sold to the federal government, the Bureau of Prisons has begun talking with local leaders. Last night, the Thomson village board met, via Skype, with its official Bureau contact.

Cathy Litcher is based in Raleigh, North Carolina - and her title with the bureau is  "Activation Coordinator." She says her job will be to work with the village and other local and regional agencies to prepare for opening the prison.
Litcher emphasizes there is no money in the current federal budget to open Thomson, and she doesn't know if any money, or how much, will be included in the budget proposed for the next fiscal year which begins in October. With all that unknown, she can't say how many people might be hired to work at the prison, when-ever it opens.

The Bureau of Prisons will send two employees to Thomson this spring - starting in April a plumber and a heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning technician will make sure the prison in good shape for its opening sometime in the future.  Litcher plans to talk again with the village board during its next meeting on March 4th.
