Run With Carl
August 29, 2014
An annual fundraising run for college scholarships will end this weekend. After 20 years, organizers of the Run With Carl have decided Monday will be the last one.
Spokeswoman Jamie Lange says the race was started by the Schillig family to honor their son Carl, an avid runner, who was killed in a car accident. Since the first race in 1995, up to 14-hundred people have participated each year to raise money for college scholarships for graduates of Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley high schools.
She says the family decided the 20th year would be a good time to end the Run With Carl.
"You know, all good things come to an end. This was a good ending point for us, you know. Two decades of memories is a great way to do this. It takes a lot of time to do this, and the meaning of this race was to be able to let this scholarship continue, and the families made the commitment to ensure this can happen indefinitely. So, we accomplished what we set out to do."
Lange says recently the Carl D. Schillig Memorial Scholarship fund awarded its 29th and 30th scholarships. Each year, 2 students receive 4,000 dollars each. The 20th Anniversary Run With Carl will be held Monday (9/1), beginning at 7:30 AM at the Life Fitness Center in Bettendorf.
