RI Council - Audubon School

May  13, 2013

Economic development versus historic preservation - that's the question on the agenda tonight for the Rock Island city council. It will consider a decision last month by the Preservation Commission to designate the former Audubon School a historic landmark.

The school board has agreed to sell the property on 18th Avenue to Fareway which is considering demolishing the school and building a new grocery store.

While neighbors, and others, would like to save Audubon, the school district says it's spending money to maintain it which could be better spent on kids. And selling to Fareway would put the property on the tax rolls. City staff recommends the Rock Island city council over-rule the Preservation Commission and side with the school district. That will require a two-thirds vote.
