Happy Birthday Band Shell
August 08, 2013
Orion will host a big birthday party this weekend. Saturday the town will celebrate the 100th birthday of the band shell in Central Park. Kevin Roberts, president of Main Street Orion, says it was built in 1913 after much debate about whether the original band shell should be replaced.
"The founders of the village and later the people who lived there felt that music and entertainment was important. They built a band shell, outgrew its use, wanted a new band shell, and so they created the current band shell that's there now."
The bandshell has been renovated at least three times during the past 100 years. And it gets a lot of use each year - movies are shown there all summer, a talent show and other events are held there, and it's the center of the annual Orion Fall Festival.
The celebration will feature food, entertainment, an auction, and free birthday cake. And it will conclude with fireworks.
The Orion band shell is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
