Dress for Success

February  03, 2014

An organization that helps women find work is expanding in downtown Davenport. Today Dress for Success will hold an open house and ribbon cutting at its new location.

Founder and executive director, Regina Haddock, says Dress for Success is an international non-profit that helps women trying to enter the workforce. Clients are referred to the organization by agencies such as Humility of Mary and Family Resources.

"Ideally when she has an interview, she gets a fabulous suit, shoes, handbag, makeup - whatever we can to get her feeling confident and ready for the interview. We coach her a little bit on how to interview effectively, and sometimes do mock interviews if they're willing."

Then when a woman is hired, she can come back for more free clothing.

"95 per cent of the clothing we get is by donation from women in this community. Occasionally stores like Dress Barn will host a suit drive for us. Even then it's still going to come right here from the Quad Cities metro area or from the eastern Iowa - western Illinois region."

Haddock first opened the Quad Cities branch of Dress for Success in 2011 in the Union Arcade building in downtown Davenport. But when the building was sold, she found a new location in a building at 311 East Second Street owned by the Bechtel Trusts. It has five times as much space, and the lease costs just one dollar a year.

The ribbon cutting will be held at 4:30 pm.
