Bettendorf Community Open House

July  21, 2014

City officials are working on a plan to improve Bettendorf, and they want to hear from their residents. This evening, the city will hold a community open house. Every ten to 15 years, it puts together a master plan for development. Community Development Director, Bill Connors, says the city has seen many new projects since the last plan was completed in 2000, such as Cumberland Square and the I-80 interchange at Middle Road.

"Middle Road intersection, it has done a great deal of redevelopment. We've got a new Hilton Garden Inn, a new Starbucks, new convenience store going in close to that Duck Creeke Plaza area, and we have had a great deal of residential development in the last ten years."

A steering commitee has held focus groups to discuss the master plan. And the city has hired a consultant, R-D-G Planning & Design, from Des Moines.  Connors says tonight's community meeting is the first chance for residents to look at the plan and make suggestions, especially about downtown.

"We've had 27 properties that have been purchased by the Department of Transportation and have either been demolished or in the process of being demolished and when the new bridge is complete, we're going to need to figure out what we're going to do redevelop around those areas."

The Bettendorf Community Open House will be held from 5 to 7 pm at the Waterfront Convention Center.  Anyone unable to attend the event can view the current master plan and share their ideas online at http://www.rdgusa.com/crp/bettendorf/.
