Beauty in the Bluff Work Day

June  12, 2014

Hundreds of volunteers will spruce up a Davenport Neighborhood in the fall. Today the Scott County Housing Council announced details of a work-day in September called "Beauty in the Bluff." "Bluff" refers to the Hilltop Campus area of the city - from 10th Street to Locust, and between Pershing and Scott Streets. And it's made possible by a 50,000 dollar grant from Wells Fargo Banks.

One of the many groups participating will be Neighborhood Housing Services. Program manager Dawn Mutum-Plies says it fits in nicely with her group's mission of helping people find safe and affordable homes.

"We've done a lot of exterior grants over the years, and our experience has been it makes a tremendous impact on the neighborhood, because it starts the ball rolling - if people see other people doing exterior repairs, they're going to get involved in it."

Other participants include Habitat for Humanity, Re-building Together Quad Cities, and United Neighbors.

Wells Fargo Market President, Tony Knobbe, says the money comes from a program called "Leading the Way Home," and it's distributed by the bank based on need.

"We look for neighborhoods that need stabilization, some rehab work where there's abandoned or neglected properties, or simply homeowners who aren't able to afford or physically be able to improve their properties."

Neighborhood residents who'd like work done at their homes must apply by June 30th, to either Habitat or Re-Building Together. Eligible projects include yard cleanup, painting, and minor repairs.
