Augustana Football Preview

August  19, 2013

A trip to Europe over the summer has helped the Augustana College football team prepare for the new season.  Today, during media day, head coach Rob Cushman said he was able to take 45 players to France and play the French national team.

"That gave us a competitive situation - a real football game. It gave us a chance for our veterans who made the trip to get some game experience, compete, find out where we are, and really kick start it into our fall camp. And so far that's been the case."

Thirteen of last year's 22 starting players have returned, and Cushman says he's counting on the younger players to fill some holes at key positions such as linebacker, and for depth at all positions, especially the offensive line.  But he's pretty sure who the starting quarterback will be.

"Sam Frasco played a little bit last year and had mixed results - really showed signs, then was injured and had a tough time getting it going on a consistent basis. He really took over this winter, had a great spring practice, and played phenomenally in France."

Besides looking forward to the new season, Coach Cushman is also excited about the new stands, press box, sky boxes, and locker rooms that will be completed soon on the north side of Ericson Field - he says it'll be nice to have updated facilities and will be a big help in recruiting in the future.

The season opens September 7th, at home, against Mount Saint Joseph.
