Delay in Augie Stadium Construction

August  08, 2013

Even though the addition to the football stadium at Augustana College won't be finished in time for the first home games, the games will still be played as scheduled.

Executive Vice President Kent Barnds said construction on the Austin Knowlton Outdoor Athletic Complex ran into a few roadblocks since it began last fall.

"This is a pretty complex project in a very compressed time frame," said Barnds. "And so the weather did have some influence. If you remember, this spring was pretty wet, and it was wet during a critical time for some of the foundation, and systems, and site work. We also did, of course, experience a brief delay because of a strike which didn't have anything to do with Augustana College. But that did, of course, have an impact on the time frame.'

Barnds said there will be plenty of seats for Vikings fans during the first two home games, and he expects construction will be completely finished by Homecoming weekend in October.

"For the first two games, we don't anticipate that we will have the locker room, the coach's offices," said Barnds, "As well as some of the things that are on the third level, the press box and coaching boxes complete. So we will be using the press box and the coaching boxes on the south side of the field for the first two games, unless we are able to make up some time in the schedule."

Along with the stands and locker room, Augusta is also finishing up construction on the new Center for Student Life and renovations on Old Main.
