2014-15 Opening Day for Dav Schools

February  24, 2014

Once again mid-August may be the starting date for students in the Davenport schools. Tonight the board of education will hold a public hearing on the starting date for classes, and Superintendent Art Tate will recommend August 14th.

Spokeswoman Dawn Saul says the 14th is a Thursday, several days later than last year. And the recommendation follows several public meetings, and discussions with staff and students.

"We want to end the first semester prior to the winter break. Students have said, almost to a person, that they really want to get those first semester exams over before they go on winter break."

Ending the semester just before Christmas would also help students who are graduating early and want to enroll in college right away, or start a job.

"We do try to coordinate some of our start dates as much as possible with the districts around us. So I think an Augustan 14th start date will put us pretty well in the center of things."

Once the Davenport school board approves a starting date, it must still ask the Iowa Department of Education for a waiver, because it's before Labor Day. And some state officials have been trying in recent years to limit the number of waivers, and force schools to open later than mid-August.
