'Black Students Didn't Feel Like They Had A Voice'

Joy and Gaye Shannon were new to the Quad Cities when they became students at Rock Island High School in the early 1970s. 

It was a time when political tension and unfair treatment of African American students persisted in schools. In 1972, this angst resulted in a week of unrest at Rock Island High School — often referred to as the Rocky riots.

A major step in the renovation of a historic park in Rock Island will be taken Tuesday. The newly-refurbished baseball diamond in Douglas Park will host its first game - Rock Island High School versus Alleman.

Grad Walk Inspires Young Students

A local principal hopes to encourage his students to graduate with an idea he got from social media. Today, Thomas Jefferson Elementary in Milan held a "Grad Walk," with graduating seniors from Rock Island High School.

Student achievement and new programs were among the top improvements this past year for the Rock Island and Milan schools. That's according to Superintendent Mike Oberhaus, who gave the annual State of the Schools address today, to members of the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.

Students at Rock Island High School will make their own business plan and test it in the community. Last week, the school launched a new entrepreneur program, to teach students how to run a business. Rock Island High School business teacher, Trish Matson, says only about 9 schools across the US offer the Incubator Entrepreneur Program. And, high schools are an "untapped market of new ideas and innovation."

She says an old childcare classroom has been renovated to look like a Google office, with open space and work stations. And, 45 students are working in teams of 5 to create a business plan, conduct market research, and test it on potential customers.

A Vietnam War Veteran from Milan will be honored Dec. 9. The Rock Island School Board will award Thomas Hickson his 1968 high school diploma.  Hickson says he left high school when he was seventeen to join the Navy. 

In 1972, Hickson was honorably discharged from the Navy. When he returned to the Quad Cities, he earned his GED and became a police officer in Milan.
