A veteran alderman in East Moline has decided to run for mayor. Monday morning, 7th Ward alderman Gary Westbrook officially began his campaign.

"With the 2016 presidential election behind us, it seems we have entered into an unsteady political climate. And now more than ever we need strong leadership and especially at the local level."

While on the council, he says he assisted in the development of many city infrastructure projects, worked on the re-vitalization plan for East Moline parks, and helped set up a summer parks program for young people.

If elected, Westbrook promises to re-develop downtown.

"As mayor, not only will I work toward developing the community as a whole, but more specifically restoring downtown to the vibrant and bustling forefront I remember from my youth."

Westbrook grew up in East Moline and worked at the Deere Harvester Works until his retirement in 2004. The following year he was first elected to the city council.

Already in the race for mayor is former police chief Reggie Freeman who announced his candidacy in September. Current mayor John Thodos has not yet announced whether he will run again.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
