The first evidence of West Nile Virus this summer has been found in Rock Island County. The health department says one of several batches of mosquitoes it collected has tested positive for the sometimes deadly virus.
West Nile is transmitted by mosquitoes who've picked it up from feeding on infected birds. And the health department cautions that activity by both mosquitoes and the virus will increase through the rest of the summer.
Local residents are asked to contact the Rock Island County Health Department if they find dead birds that might have had the virus.
