Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Parade Saturday

Parade Route

One local veteran says "it's about time" those who served in the Vietnam War are given the recognition they never received 50 years ago. Saturday, a bi-state Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Parade will be held, from Rock Island to Davenport.

Sarah Ritter reports.
Summary

Chairman, Ed Hildebrand, says over 60 groups will walk in the parade, including the Great Lakes Naval Band, plus honor guards and students from Clinton, UT, Bettendorf, and Pleasant Valley high schools.

He calls it the welcome-home parade Vietnam veterans never got.

Hildebrand says participation in the parade keeps growing, with veterans groups from Muscatine and Chicago now joining the event. Originally, he expected about 1,500 people would watch the parade Saturday, but now he's anticipating 3,000 will turn out.

The Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Parade begins at 10:30 am Saturday, at 23rd Street and 4th Avenue in Rock Island, and will end at Veterans Memorial Park in Davenport.

The parade will be followed by a music festival on the Davenport riverfront.
