Hundreds of volunteers fanned out across the Quad Cities on Thursday to lend a helping hand. United Way of the Quad Cities held its annual Spring Day of Caring to assist local organizations with their to-do lists.
The Arc of The Quad Cities in southwest Rock Island now has a spruced-up exterior thanks to volunteers. Cythina Krist helped by pulling weeds and scraping old paint off the building.
"It's really an opportunity to give back to the community. [The] United Way services a lot of these organizations throughout the Quad Cities and it's our chance to go out and give them a hand."
Krist also worked alongside Deere employee Craig Rehn to remove rocks.
"It's a job the Arc wanted us to do, it's two of the tasks they wanted us to do. I think it's great, it's a beautiful day and we're able to get some work done for the Arc."
Lorie Dixon of the Arc is grateful for the extra help.
"This particular Day [of Giving] is something that we absolutely cannot recreate in any other capacity throughout the year. It's just a really great opportunity for us to partner with other communities and accomplish a lot."
United Way says about 900 volunteers helped complete more than 50 projects.
