News headlines for the morning of September 5, 2017

  • After a year of single-stream recycling in Scott County, more people are recycling a lot more stuff. The Waste Commission's "Go All In" campaign has worked so well, it's hired 11 workers to begin a new, evening shift. 

  • The Illinois state pension funds are among the worst-funded in the nation. Yet, a new state law allows less money to be put toward that purpose.

  • Rock Island native Madison Keys advanced Monday night to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open for the first time in her career.

  • In the Midwest League, the River Bandits snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over Wisconsin in Monday's regular season finale at Modern Woodmen Park. The Bandits open the first round of the playoffs Wednesday night in Peoria with game one of the best-of-three series with the Chiefs. The Clinton Lumberkings' season came to an end yesterday with a 1-0 win over Burlington—their third shutout win against the Bees this season and their fifth of the year.
