Togo Uprising QC

Ontheworldmap.com

Even though they now live thousands of miles from their native country, hundreds of people are expected to demonstrate tomorrow in the Quad Cities for civil rights and political change in the west African country of Togo. Members of the group, Togo Uprising QC, will hold a rally and march in Rock Island.

Spokeswoman Nana Ouro-Agoro from Carbon Cliff, says the same family has been in power for 50 years, following the assassination of an elected president.

They'll rally in Schwiebert Riverfront Park at 11 am Saturday, then march to the office of Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, to ask her to take their concerns and grievances to Washington.

Ouro-Agoro estimates 2,000 immigrants from Togo live in the Quad Cities area, with many of them working at the Tyson Foods plant in Joslin.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
