'Talking Art' With Johnnie Cluney

Longtime WVIK listeners might remember the program Art Talks. It was hosted by the late Bruce Carter and featured interviews with local painters, musicians, and writers.

Now, as part of our efforts to enhance coverage of the local art scene, we'll bring you Talking Art, a regular segment during Morning Edition hosted by Carolyn Martin.

For this first installment, Carolyn Martin talks with Johnnie Cluney, the artist behind the brand new Welcome To Davenport mural near the Iowa approach to the Government Bridge. Cluney is also the artist behind the portraits at the Daytrotter in Davenport.

Please join WVIK for a walking tour of downtown Davenport murals on Tuesday, September 26. The tour will start at 6 p.m. across from the new sign at the base of the Government Bridge, which is at the intersection of East 2nd Street and LeClaire Street. Johnnie Cluney will be there to discuss the making of his sign.

The tour will continue past additional murals commissioned in the past by Quad City Arts, and painted under the direction of Sarah Robb, who has worked for Quad City Arts for the past 11 years. She will accompany the tour as well.

Food trucks will be parked close by in Davenport, so catch dinner at your favorite truck and enjoy a great evening viewing urban artwork up close.

Produced by Lacy Scarmana.

Carolyn Martin joined WVIK as a host of Talking Art in 2017. A long-time fan of NPR programming with a love of storytelling and all art forms, she is thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with creative people who beautify our community and make the Quad Cities region an even better place to live.
