'Talking Art' With Dawn Wohlford-Metallo

The 41st annual High School Art Invitational is currently on exhibit at the Quad City Arts gallery in Rock Island through May 3rd, 2018. High school art teachers from the six counties surrounding the Quad Cities on both the Illinois and Iowa side of our community nominate five of their promising artistic students to submit their work for the exhibition.

There are three additional categories (film, woodworking, and art created with recycled materials) that can be entered beyond the various genres chosen by the nominated students. Art teachers may also submit their work.

The exhibition will be on display through May 3rd at Quad City Arts, 1715 2nd Avenue in Rock Island, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Don’t forget to vote for the People’s Choice Award through May 3rd while you are there. Some of the students’ art is available for purchase.

Listen here to the conversation with Dawn Wohlford-Metallo, Visual Arts Director for Quad City Arts, about the show and the importance of encouraging art and recognizing creative students in our schools.

The award ceremony was recently held on April 5th, and 43 awards were given out that night in front of a packed gallery with well over 300 people in attendance.

Carolyn Martin joined WVIK as a host of Talking Art in 2017. A long-time fan of NPR programming with a love of storytelling and all art forms, she is thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with creative people who beautify our community and make the Quad Cities region an even better place to live.
