A Rock Island homeless shelter for women and children has an extra $1,000 to spend this year, thanks to a grant from the Junior Board of Rock Island.
St. Joseph the Worker House Association executive director Ann Rings says they'll spend the money on toys and outings for the families it hosts.
Ring says most kids at the shelter are younger than five years old.
"They're in a strange house with strange people, they don't know where they're at, they don't really know why," she says. "Having a toy area helps them to kind of come out of their shell a little bit."
Ring thinks the money will last about a year, and it will also pay for outings to places like the Niabi Zoo or Putnam Museum.
The shelter currently houses three children.
