Should Hero Street Get a U.S. Postage Stamp?

Residents of the Quad Cities want to feature Hero Street on a U.S. postage stamp. Monday morning, the families of soldiers who lived on Hero Street and served in the armed forces were joined by local leaders to announce the community-wide effort.

Illinois State Senator Neil Anderson from Andalusia was joined by Augustine Ruiz from the U.S. Postal Service. Ruiz says that the postal service receives over 80-thousand submissions for stamps each year.

"Of those 80,000 submissions, less than 50 are selected. You will be one of those 80,000. Now whether or not you remain one of the 50, and you remain one of the last standing, really depends on the effort you put behind this effort today."

The campaign to commemorate Hero Street on a national level is being led by Senator Anderson, who sponsored a bill designating May of this year as "Hero Street Month."

"A stamp is a simple, yet effective way to make all Americans know about the significance of Hero Street. And it's a gesture to all the families that this nation have served."

A letter campaign for the community to support a Hero Street postage stamp began today Monday, and anyone wanting to join the effort can send a letter to the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee at 475 E. L'Enfant Plaza SW, Room 330 Washington D.C. 20260-3501.
