Share Joys Underway at Moline High School

The annual effort to buy clothing for needy children in the Moline School District is underway. For the 71st year, students at Moline High School are raising money for the Share Joys Campaign.

Faculty advisor Allison Ryser says the campaign usually raises about 45,000 dollars, with the proceeds going to help children in the Moline schools buy new clothes.

"A gentleman still sends a check every couple of years. He and his brothers got Share Joys many, many years ago. He's probably in his 50's or so now and got the clothing when he was younger."

Recipients are chosen by school principals and counselors, and last year more than 260 received help.

The Share Joys Campaign kicked off Wednesday morning with the annual donut eating contest which usually brings in about one-third of the total. Then next week, more money will be raised through a variety of activities at the high school.

Shopping day at J.C. Penney will be December 11th.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
